Text: Genesis 17: 5, 15
Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee. And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be.
All across the world, there is a common tradition that occurs when a woman gets married, her last name is changed as she drops her father’s name and takes on her husband’s name. In some cultures the husband takes on the wife’s last name; either way, there is a name change that occurs as a result of marriage. However, in our text, the name change was not as a result of marriage, but God himself changed the name of this couple as a result of his covenant with them. God is still in the business of changing the names of his people today. Remember Jabez whose name meant sorrow. God changed his name to favor and enlargement. I pray that this year as you walk with the Lord, he will give you a new name that will change your story forever. The name change of Abraham and his wife changed their story forever and so shall it be with you this year, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Prayer point: Father, just as you changed Abraham and Sarah’s name, please change my name this day and cause me to laugh and dance for joy in Jesus’ name. Amen.
